  1. The Padma Awards to be given on the occasion of Republic Day have been announced. This time 7 celebrities will be given the Padma Vibhushan, 16 the Padma Bhushan and 118 Padma Shri. Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj have been posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan.   2. The Rajasthan Legislative Assembly passed a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Rajasthan has become the third state after Kerala and Punjab to pass such a proposal. However, the Rajasthan Assembly passed a resolution on the amendments in the NPR along with the CAA. Rajasthan is the first state where a resolution has been passed regarding amendments to NPR.
  3. Recently the Union Ministry of Rural Development and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have signed the MoU. This MoU has been signed under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission. The objective of this MoU is to strengthen rural institutions at the grassroots level. Through this, efforts will be made to improve the lives of poor and deprived people by creating employment in rural areas.
  4. On the eve of Republic Day, 4 thousand students gathered at a place in Pune to make 4 live human paintings. These paintings are named in the Guinness Book of World Records. 4004 students participated in the program organized by the Jill Education Society. Cardboards were used to make it. All together made Rajmata Jijabai, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sardar Tanhaji Malusare and the portrait of the tricolor.
  5. Boxing qualifiers in China for the Tokyo Olympic Games will now be played in Jordan. Its host has been taken away from China due to coronavirus.   7. Recently 97 countries were surveyed on breastfeeding rates by the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi), Sri Lanka ranked first in this survey. Sri Lanka got 91 out of 100 points. There is a lot of emphasis on the nutrition of mothers and children in Sri Lanka. The survey evaluates countries based on 10 indicators. In this survey, Sri Lanka is followed by Cuba, Bangladesh, Gambia, and Bolivia. India is ranked 78 in this survey, India score 45. The World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) uses three color codes – Green, Blue, and Yellow – to rank countries. Sri Lanka is the only country to achieve the highest color code ‘Green’. The World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi) was started in 2004,
  8. The new edition of the Oxford Dictionary includes 26 new Indian English words such as Aadhaar, Chawl, Dabba, Strike, and Shaadi. This 10th edition of the dictionary contains 384 Indian English words. 1000 new words like chatbot, fake news, and microplastic have also been included in this edition. Fatima Dada, managing director of Oxford University Press, said that 22 of these words have been included in the printed dictionary, while the other four have been included in the digital edition.

The Department of Biotechnology organized an international conference on ‘Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) – Designing the Future: New Horizons’ on 23 and 24 January 2019 at India Habitat Center, New Delhi. The conference was organized to increase the participation of women in the ‘STEM’ sector to further their career in science.
  10. According to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, West Bengal produced the highest 29.55 million tonnes of vegetables last year. This was 15.9% of the total vegetable production of the country. Uttar Pradesh was at the forefront of vegetable production in 2017-18, with Uttar Pradesh at 27.71 million tonnes this year. Andhra Pradesh ranks first in fruit production with 17.61 million tonnes, while Maharashtra is second with 10.82 million tonnes.
  11. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh (PM), Sheikh Hasina Wajed, has launched an e-passport in Dhaka, Bangladesh as a Mujib Century Year gift for the country. Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to get an e-passport facility and the 119th country in the world. Malaysia is the first country in the world to launch the facility in 1998.
  12. Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora has assumed the chairmanship of the Forum of South Asia Election Management Institutions for the year 2020. The outgoing chairman of the forum, KM Nurul Huda, Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh, handed over the logo of the forum to Shri Arora at the 10th annual meeting of the forum in New Delhi.
  13. 15 agreements were signed between India and Brazil to enhance cooperation on various topics such as trade and investment, oil and gas, cyber-security and information technology. These agreements were reached after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Jaire Messias Bolsonaro who visited India.
  14. President Ram Nath Kovind has given his approval to confer the Jeevan Raksha Padak Award 2019 to 54 people. Out of these, seven people will be given the Best Survival Medal, eight people will get the Best Survival Medal and 39 people will be given the Survival Medal. Five awards are being given posthumously. People from all walks of life are eligible for these awards. The award will be conferred by the respective Ministries, Organizations and State Governments.
  15. President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the award of gallantry and defense medals to armed forces personnel and others related to defense on the eve of the 71st Republic Day celebrations. Lieutenant Colonel Jyoti Lama of 11th Gorkha Rifles, Bijendra Singh, Major of Army Air Defense, Naib Subedar Narendra Singh of Parachute Squad, Naresh Kumar of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and Soldier Karmadev Oraon of Bihar Regiment will be awarded Shaurya Chakra. Naib Subedar Somveer of the Jat Regiment will be awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously. The Param Vishisht Seva Medal will be awarded to 19 senior Army officers, including Lt. Gen. Ranvir Singh, Commander of the Northern Army. Altogether eight Yudh Seva Medals, four Best Yudh Seva Medals, 32 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, 76 Vishisht Seva Medals and 151 Army Medals have been announced.
  16. The Madhya Pradesh government has made it mandatory for schools to read the Preamble of the Constitution every Saturday after prayer. School Education Department informed that orders have been issued to District Education Officers in this regard.
