The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan released the annual TB report 2020 in the presence of Minister of State (Health and Family Welfare) Mr. Ashwini Kumar Choubey through a virtual program. He also released a Joint Monitoring Mission (JMM) report, a manual on Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for TB patients under the Dictic (NIKSHAY) system, a training module, and a quarterly newspaper Naksha Patrika. Key achievements listed in the report include:
In the year 2019, about 24.04 lakh TB patients have been notified. This is a 14% increase in TB notification as compared to the year 2018.
On-line information of TB patients was received through the drastic system.
In 2017, the number of missing cases declined to 2.9 lakh as against more than 10 lakh.
Private sector notifications increased by 35% with 6.78 lakh TB patients.
The proportion of children diagnosed with TB increased to 8% in 2019 as compared to 6% in 2018 due to the easy availability of molecular diagnostics.
The provision of HIV screening of all notified TB patients increased from 67% in 2018 to 81% in 2019.
The expansion of treatment services has improved the treatment success rate of notified patients by 12%. The rate for 2019 is 81% compared to 69% in 2018.
More than 4.5 lakh dot centers provide treatment in almost every village across the country.
IIT-Bombay students and researchers have recently developed an indigenous receiver chip ‘Dhruva’. This chip can be used in smartphones and navigation devices to find locations and routes in the country. It will receive signals from the NAVIC group of navigation satellites of India as well as from the US’s Global Positioning System-based satellites to accurately determine a person’s location.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development has prepared a roadmap for National Academic Research and Council-NCERT for the year 2020-21. Under this, NCERT has been asked to prepare infographics, posters, and presentations to teach each subject from first to fifth grade by October this year and from March next year to 12th standard. Online training courses of teachers are to be prepared for first to fifth grade by December this year and from June to 2021 for classes VI to 12th.
The Government of India has announced an ordinance to keep all cooperative banks under the supervision of the Reserve Bank of India. The decision was announced by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar. Following this decision, 1,482 urban cooperative banks and 58 multi-state cooperative banks will come under the supervisory powers of the Reserve Bank of India. Now, just as RBI powers apply to listed banks, the same will apply to cooperative banks. This decision was taken to assure the safekeeping of 4.84 trillion amount of over 86 million depositors in these banks.
In an important decision, the government launched the Rs 15,000 crore Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund for the development of infrastructure related to animal husbandry, dairy, and livestock-related enterprises. The objective of this scheme is to employ about 35 lakh youth in the country. Under the scheme, banks will provide loans up to 90 percent to start ventures in the respective areas. The government announced a three percent rebate in interest for all loans under the scheme. The Development Fund will encourage infrastructural investment in dairy, meat processing, and animal feed plants. Eligible beneficiaries under this scheme will include Farmers Producer Associations, MSMEs, companies falling under section 8, private sector companies, and individual entrepreneurs.
Indian Railways will create eight lakh man-days of employment in the infrastructure projects worth Rs. 1800 crores for migrant laborers and others in the next 125 days. The Ministry of Railways reviewed the progress of the Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan in a meeting held through video conference with Zone Railways and its public sector units. The scheme is being implemented in 116 districts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Jharkhand.
The Education Minister of Haryana has announced that the Haryana State Government has signed an agreement with Jio, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited, under the Chief Minister’s Distance Learning Program. By this agreement, education will be provided to school children in rural areas of the state. Four channels of EDUSAT will be available free on JioTV’s live television streaming application JioTV. Content broadcast on EDUSAT’s channels will also be available on the JioTV platform in record mode that will enable students to watch and study at their convenience. The agreement will benefit a combined 52 lakh (5.2 million) students from both government and private schools in Haryana.
The meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Russia-India-China (RIC) was held on June 23, 2020. This tripartite virtual meeting was hosted by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The RIC meeting was held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations after the conclusion of World War II. The government e-marketplace (GeM) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has made it mandatory for sellers to provide information about the country of origin. Sellers have been advised to mention information about the country of origin when registering all new products on GeM. However, vendors who have already registered their products before the launch of this new feature on GeM will be regularly reminded to update information about Country of Origin. They will also be warned that if they fail to update it, their products will be removed from GeM. The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has taken this step with the prime objective of promoting ‘Make in India’ and ‘Self-dependent India’. The Union Minister for Labor and Employment, on 24 March 2020, to assist the building and construction workers, the Chief Minister of all the states and union territories was asked to prepare the details of the state’s construction and construction workers’ bank accounts, etc. Financial assistance can be provided through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, inaugurated a bridge over the Devika River at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. The Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Nitin Gadkari launched the Credit Guarantee Scheme (CGSSD) “Distressed Assets Fund – Sub-ordinate Debt for MSMEs” for sub-loans. Under this scheme loan guarantee, up to twenty thousand crore rupees will be given to the promoters who can take a loan from the bank for further investment in their small, micro, and medium enterprises. The scheme will assist the promoters of the current small, micro, and medium enterprises, which are facing financial crunch and have not been able to pay their outstanding debts by 30 April this year. Under this scheme, promoters of micro, small and medium industries will be given a loan equal to fifteen percent of their share of Rs 75 lakh whichever is less. There will be a seven-year moratorium on the payment of principal and the maximum period of payment will be ten years. About two lakh entrepreneurs will get help from this scheme.

The central government quoted World Bank as saying that the rupee per dollar PPP at the level of gross domestic product (GDP) increased to 20.65 in 2017 from 15.55 in 2011. At the same time, the dollar exchange rate for the rupee increased to 65.12 in 2017, from 46.67 in 2011. Also, in 2017, the price level index (PLI) ratio to market exchange rate improved to 47.55, from 42.99 in 2011. Purchasing power parity is used to compare the level of price of similar goods in economies. An estimated 120 million children living in South Asian countries, including India, may fall into poverty within the next six months due to the Kovid-19 crisis, raising the total number of such children in the region to 36 crore. Indian Financial Technology & Allied Services (IFTAS) has announced the appointment of T. Rabi Shankar as the new president of the organization. IFTAS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of India. T Rabi Shankar is currently serving as Executive Director of Reserve Bank of India for Payment Systems, Information Technology, Risk Management, and Fintech and has held a concurrent charge, ex-officio charge as Chairman of IFTAS. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswamy inaugurated the Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Namakkal. He inaugurated the plant through video conference in the presence of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Compressed biogas plant (CBG) has been built at Rs 25 crore. This new plant will be capable of producing 15 tonnes of CBG per day and 20 tonnes of bio manure per day. Apart from this, the Chief Minister also inaugurated five CBG retail shops in Namakkal, Salem, Puduchitham and Rasipuram. The CBG plant belongs to IoT, a joint venture between the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and the German company Oiltanking GmbH.

ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) has been involved in the excavation and development of the Shwe project in Myanmar since 2002 as part of a faculty of companies from South Korea, India, and Myanmar. Indian PSU GAIL is also an investor in the project. OVL has invested $ 722 million (about Rs. 3949 crores as per average annual exchange rate) in the project till 31 March 2019. Educational institutions have also been asked to discourage the use of plastic bottles and take effective steps for the management of plastic waste.
