  1. Eight West African countries have decided to rename their common currency to Echo. The current currency “CFA franc” is intended to end the association with the French colonial period. “Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo” currently use this currency. All these countries, except ‘Guinea-Bissau’, are former colonies of France. The announcement was made during the “Ivory Coast” visit of French President “Emmanuel Macron”. Describing the decision as a historic improvement, ‘Macron’ said that the eco currency will be in circulation from 2020. The “CFA Franc”, introduced in 1945, was seen as France’s intervention in the East African colonies even after the independence of these countries.
  2. The forty-day “Chilla-e-Kalan” with a cold winter in Jammu and Kashmir started from yesterday. The valley has been experiencing a severe cold for the last 10 days and the minimum temperature is running well below the freezing point. The Meteorological Department has forecast dry cold for the next few days in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh region.
  3. Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party, and the Congress-led coalition government have announced a debt waiver for farmers under its Common Minimum Program (CMP). Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced in the Legislative Assembly that loans of up to 2 lakh rupees of all farmers of the state will be waived. The Chief Minister said that this loan waiver amount will be sent directly to the banks. He informed us that the benefit of this loan waiver will be available on the outstanding loan till 30 September 2019 and this scheme will be applicable from March. The Chief Minister has named it Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Loan Waiver Scheme.
  4. President Ashraf Ghani won the election in Afghanistan three months ago. According to election officials, in the preliminary results, Ashraf Ghani has crossed the 50% votes required to become president.   5. “Jalor and Sirohi” districts of Rajasthan will have a bear sanctuary. This will be the first bear sanctuary of the state and fourth in the country.   6. President Ramnath Kovind inaugurated the mobile application of the Indian Red Cross Society in Hyderabad.   9. In Sikkim, the foundation stone of two integrated units of the Sikkim Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Organics Limited-SIFCO was laid. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar were present on the occasion. SIFCO is a joint venture of IFFCO, the world’s largest fertilizer cooperative organization. It aims to strengthen the organic fertilizer market for Sikkim and other northeastern states of the country.

  11. The Trump administration has appointed Indian-origin doctor “Monisha Ghosh” as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in the US Federal Communications Commission (Federal Communications Commission).   12. Trade ministers of Japan, China, and South Korea will discuss free trade agreement in Beijing. This will be the first meeting of its kind in the last three years. The ministers of the three countries will discuss cooperation to conclude the negotiations of the 16th Asia Pacific nations and to sign the Free Trade Agreement by the end of next year. The proposed agreement is known as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership- RCEP. Ministers of the three countries will also discuss expediting negotiations for the proposed trilateral free trade agreement. A joint statement will be issued after the meeting.
  13. India has constructed a girls hostel for the Armed Police Force School located in Kirtipur, Nepal. Dr. Ajay Kumar, Deputy Head of Mission at the Indian Embassy inaugurated this two-story hostel building at Kirtipur in Kathmandu district. The Nepal Armed Police Force School is an educational institution created under the Welfare Service Center of the Nepal Armed Police Force. The school was established in 2005 and has more than 21% of students.
  14. In Cuba, President Miguel Diaz-Canal has appointed Manuel Marrero Cruz as the new Prime Minister of the country. This appointment has been made under the new constitution created earlier this year. Mr. Marrero is an architectural artist and has been the Minister of Tourism in Cuba for 16 years. Tourism has played an important role in strengthening Cuba’s economy. Former Prime Minister of Cuba Fidel Castro abolished the post of Prime Minister in 1976. This is the first time that after nearly 40 years, someone has been made Prime Minister again in Cuba.
  15. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has made many achievements this year which have strengthened the economy of the country. India is the largest manufacturer of two and three-wheelers and the fourth-largest manufacturer of passenger cars. Under the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan – 2020, the government has approved a plan to manufacture and rapidly adopt electric and hybrid vehicles. The aim is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels so that vehicles can solve the problem of carbon emissions. Under this scheme, the Department of Heavy Industries approved four hundred 25 electric and hybrid buses for different cities, which would cost about three hundred crores. Four hundred of these 125 hundred e-buses have been received and have been sent to Indore, Lucknow, Guwahati, Jammu and Kashmir, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Shimla, and Mumbai. The remaining 25 e-buses will be available in Mumbai by the end of this month.
  16. Pakistan’s court on Saturday sentenced a Muslim professor to death on charges of blasphemy. Junaid Hafiz was a lecturer in the English Department of Bahauddin Zakaria University (BZU) in Multan city of Punjab province. He was arrested by the police on 13 March 2013 on charges of blasphemy. Blasphemy is a very sensitive issue in Pakistan. In such cases, sometimes the mob also targets the accused. Insulting the Quran or Prophet Muhammad can result in life imprisonment or capital punishment. Rights groups say blasphemy laws are misused for personal retaliation.
  17. India’s”Meiraba Luwang” has won the men’s singles title at the Bangladesh Junior International Badminton Tournament in Dhaka. In the final, top-seeded Miraba defeated Malaysia’s Ken Yong Ong 21-14 21-18 in consecutive games. In the women’s singles final, top-seeded India’s Trisa Jolly suffered a loss. Thailand’s Crittaporn Geantenet defeated Triesa 21-12 16-21 21-16 to win the title.
  18. India’s weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinunaga won the silver medal in the Qatar International Cup. Jayasuriya had scored 2387 runs in 1997 as an opener. Rohit also scored a career-high 43rd fifty in this innings.
  20. Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) Asansol, West Bengal has produced 300th locomotive of FY 2019-20 by 21 December 2019 in less than 9 months (216 working days) of the current financial year. The working day for production of 300th loco has come down from 292 days in 2017-18 to 249 days in 2018-19 and 216 days in the current financial year 2019-20. Thus there has been a reduction of 28% since 2017-18.
  21. Renowned filmmaker Ramchandra Babu died in Kozhikode, Kerala. He was 72 years old. Babu was associated with about 125 films. He was a part of the technology development of the Malayalam film industry and was performing his responsibilities behind the camera when films were turning from black and white to colorful. Babu worked for Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Arabic, and English language films besides Malayalam. He was the brother of Chandran, the famous film cinematographer Ravi.
