  1. Sethuraman Panchanathan, a US citizen of Indian origin, has been appointed as director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) of America. President Donald Trump approved his appointment. The US government body NSF assists research in all non-medical fields including science and engineering. The National Institute of Health (NIH) is a separate institution to work in the field of medicine. Panchanathan will replace France Kordova. Kordova’s six-year term as director of the NSF will end in 2020. The post of NSF Director is approved by the Senate.
  2. Portugal Prime Minister Antonio Costa has announced the launch of the Gandhi Citizenship Education Award, inspired by his thoughts and quotes, to uphold the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. This award will be given each year. He said that the first-year award would be dedicated to animal welfare. Mahatma Gandhi said that the greatness of any nation can be judged by its behavior towards animals. Mr. Costa was addressing the second meeting of the National Organizing Committee of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. He said that Mahatma Gandhi’s message of love and tolerance is capable of bringing revolutionary change even today.
  3. According to the US National Science Foundation (NSF), India ranks third in the world in publishing scientific articles. China is in the first place in this list while America is in second place. According to this report, 20.67% of the world’s scientific articles were written in China. In 2018, a total of 5,28,263 articles were written in China. In the US, 4,22,808 articles related to science and engineering were written in 2018. India ranks third in this list, 1,35,788 scientific articles were written in India in 2018.
  4. The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that two separate Union Territories, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, will become a Union Territory from 26 January next year. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha passed the Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019 in the Winter Session of Parliament. According to the notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the name of the Unified Union Territory will be Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Minister of State for Home Kishan Reddy has said that the merger of the two union territories is being done to prevent the recurrence of various functions and for better administration. The distance of both states is just 35 km. Dadra and Nagar Haveli have only one district, while Daman and Diu has two districts. The Asian Development Bank and the Government of India signed a loan agreement for public-private partnership projects worth $ 49 million to improve about one thousand six hundred kilometers of provincial highways in Madhya Pradesh and to make the district’s major roads two-lane.   11. India successfully test-fired two missiles from Chandipur in Odisha. The improved version of the Pinak guided rocket system was tested at the Proof and Experimental Installation Test Center of the Defense Research and Development Organization. A surface-to-air rapid action missile (QR-SAM) was launched from the mobile launcher in the launch complex of the Integrated Test Center. The mark-two version of the Pinak system has a maximum firepower of 75 km and can target 12 rockets assembled in less than 45 seconds. A surface-to-air rapid action system can also simultaneously hit multiple vehicles within a radius of about 25 to 30 kilometers with two vehicles. The surface-to-air missile will provide significant support to the defense of troops in the plains and semi-desert areas.

With this amount, 139 lakh water connections, 145 lakh sewer connections, stormwater draining projects, parks, greenery, and street lights, etc. have to be arranged in 500 cities of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Amrit Mission in June 2015. Amrit Mission aims to provide water supply, sanitation and sewage connections in all cities of the country. The target was to spend 5000 crores on Amrit Mission for five years from FY 2015.
  16. A Pakistani espionage racket that has penetrated sensitive information of the Indian Navy has been busted. Andhra Pradesh Police along with Central Intelligence Agencies and Navy’s Intelligence Wing conducted ‘Operation Dolphin’s Nose’. Seven navy officers and one hawala operator have been arrested so far from different parts of the country. The seven arrested naval officers were stationed in Mumbai, Karwar (Karnataka) and Visakhapatnam. They have given information about the movement of Indian warships and submarines to Pakistani agents.   17. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken another initiative to bring back the antiquities (idols) sold in crores abroad from India.   27. Union Forest and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has said that India is on top of the countries implementing the Paris Agreement which is rapidly moving towards achieving its target. He claimed that under the agreement, India was given a target of reducing carbon emissions by 35 percent, which has been reduced to around 21 percent at present. Climbers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and China will have to take prior permission to climb the ‘free peaks’ in India and use specific routes set by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. This has been said in the order of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Home Ministry issued a Gazette notification on Friday after amending the 70-year-old foreign order, stating that citizens of these four countries would also have to take permission to climb ‘free’ peaks. The ministry said that the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) would designate routes, deploy liaison officers with them and also impose related restrictions that are necessary to the peaks which have been opened under specific orders issued by the central government. Before this, India has established Kanchenjunga, Nepal peak in Sikkim, Garuda mountain in Uttarakhand and East Dunagiri, 137 peaks were opened across the country including Mount Kailash in Jammu and Kashmir and Mulkila in Himachal Pradesh. There are about 200 peaks in India.
