English - 21 January 2020 Current Affairs
  1. India has successfully test-fired the powerful K-4 ballistic missile while expanding its strategic capability. The missile, fired off the coast of Andhra Pradesh, has a range of 3,500 km and is capable of targeting enemy targets with a submarine. The missile was tested in the daytime by an underwater platform at sea. It has been developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). It is to be deployed in Arihant class nuclear-powered submarines. India will further test the missile before deploying it to nuclear-powered submarines. The Indian Navy currently has the Arihant as the only nuclear-powered vessel in operation. The K-4 is one of the two underwater missiles that India is preparing for the Navy. The second missile is named BO-5 and has a range of 700 km.
  2. President Ram Nath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio program for this year by feeding polio drops to children below five years at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Under this program, more than 17 crore children under the age of five will be given polio drops across the country.
  3. The 9th International Children’s Film Festival is starting in Kolkata. The film Hamid, directed by Ejaz Khan, will be screened first. The week-long festival will screen around 250 films from 45 countries.
  4. In the seventh marathon held in Mumbai, 22-year-old Derera Hurisa of Ethiopia holds the record for the full marathon elite category. In the competition, India won the Indian Elite Full Marathon by Shrinu Bugata in the men’s category and Sudha Singh in the women’s section. Amane Berrios of Ethiopia ranked first in the women’s category of the International Elite Full Marathon. In the half marathon category, Parul Chaudhary of Uttar Pradesh stood first, Aarti Patil of Mumbai second and Monika of Nashik stood third. 55,000 runners including foreign nationals participated in the marathon.
  5. Union Heavy Industries Minister Prakash Javadekar called upon the power industry to focus on the quality of electrical equipment. “In many cases, fire incidents are caused by poor quality of equipment and faulty wiring,” he said. Mr. Javadekar was inaugurating ELECRAMA 2020, the flagship show of the Indian power industry in Greater Noida. He said the power industry is a platform to facilitate the world to connect with India in technology and innovation.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Goa organized the inaugural program of the ‘Fit India Cyclothon’ program under the Fit India Mission in Panaji. The cyclotron was flagged off by Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant from the city’s Campal Parade Ground.
  7. Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle Duke and Duchess of Sussex have signed a formal agreement to renounce the royal family. As a result, they will have to give up the honor of their Hijs and every Royal Highness and will not receive money from the taxpayer’s revenue. They will not be able to officially represent the Queen as a result of this agreement coming into effect in the spring after a few weeks.
  8. In wrestling, India has returned with seven medals from the Rome ranking series. Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the gold medal in the tournament. The 25-year-old Bajrang won 4-3 against Jordan Michael Oliver of USA in the 65 kg freestyle category. The 23-year-old Ravi won the gold by defeating Nurbolat Abdulayyev of Kazakhstan 12–2 in a 61 kg category bout. Earlier, Vinesh Phogat won one gold and Anshu Malik one silver in the women’s competition. In Greco-Roman, Gurpreet Singh won gold in the 82 kg category. Sunil Kumar won the silver medal in the 97 kg category, while Sajan Bhanwal got the bronze in the 77 kg category.
  9. The World Gold Council (WGC) recently released its report ‘World Gold Outlook 2020’. The report says that Sona has performed the best since 2010 in 2019. In 2019, the gold trade in USD increased by 18.4% compared to 2010. According to WGC, RBI (Reserve Bank of India) currently has 625.2 tonnes of gold. It is 6.6% of the country’s foreign exchange. With this, India ranks sixth in the world among other central banks. The report noted that higher taxes have increased consumption of the local gold price. Recently introduced new hallmarking reforms are expected to increase consumer confidence, remove inefficiencies, boost growth and improve confidence. Among the 5 countries that have bought more gold than India, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, and Poland are included. The Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) of institutional investors was the second-largest buyer of gold in 2019. The report predicts that they will continue to buy more gold in 2020 as well. In 2019, the largest gold sellers were Uzbekistan and Venezuela. They sold 16.6 tonnes and 30.3 tonnes respectively.
  10. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the central government will spend more than one hundred lakh crore rupees in the infrastructure sector of the country during the next five years.
  11. A human chain was formed against the support of water-life-greenery in Bihar and the practice of alcohol and dowry. It is being claimed that the human chain was 18 thousand kilometers long. The event was covered with 4 helicopters, 3 small aircraft, and 100 drone cameras. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar called it historic and said that it got the full support of the people. Nitish Kumar tweeted that 5.16 crore people joined the Manav series.
  12. Australia’s Ashley Barty defeated 19-year-old Diana Yastremska in the final of the ATP-WTA Adelaide International to clinch the title at home for the first time in her career.
  13. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal issued the AAP guarantee card before issuing the manifesto for the assembly elections. In which 10 key promises have been guaranteed. The guarantee card promises to provide 24 hours of continuous power, 200 units of free electricity to all, as well as to provide relief to Delhi from the wiring of underground cables. On the second number, every household has been guaranteed 24 hours of pure drinking water and 20 thousand liters of free water for every family. Guarantee cards include world-class education, affordable accessible and best treatment for every child of Delhi, Under the biggest and cheapest traffic system, more than 11 thousand buses and more than 500 kilometers of metro lines have been promised to provide free bus travel to women as well as students. For pollution-free Delhi, to reduce the level of pollution by three times, it has promised to plant more than 2 crore saplings and make the stream of Yamuna clean and continuous. Kejriwal has given a guarantee of houses for the people living in raw colonies.
  14. The name Mughalsarai has now become history on the railway. The Railway Ministry has changed the name of this railway division to the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Railway Division. Now all the railway offices named after Mughalsarai in Mandal will also be changed. Railway Board notification related to this was made public.
  15. Hotels, malls, shops and restaurants in Mumbai will be open 24 hours from 26 January. Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray has approved the scheme after a meeting with BMC Commissioner Pravin Pardeshi, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Barve. After this decision, people will be able to enjoy the nightlife here on the lines of abroad. The government believes that the introduction of nightlife will employ millions of people. However, people are not allowed to drink alcohol during nightlife. Also, residential areas will not get the benefit. Currently, 25 malls in Mumbai have been allowed to remain open for 24 hours.
  16. Ajmer’s ultra runner Sufia Khan in Rajasthan. He has set a world record by running 4035 km in 87 days. Sufia ran from Kashmir to Kanyakumari recently. The aim was to go to 22 cities of the country and meet people and give them the message of brotherhood, unity, peace, and equality. Recently he has also got the Guinness Book of World Record certificate.
