  1. Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan dedicated the nation to a nationwide testing machine called COBAS-6800- (COBAS-6800) for the screening of COVID-19 patients. It is the first testing machine that the government has purchased for screening COVID-19 patients and has been installed at the National Disease Control Center NCDC. The Cobas-6800 is a sophisticated robotics machine that reduces the risk of health workers becoming infected. The government has now developed the capacity to conduct one lakh tests per day. NCDC is now equipped with a fully automated COBAS-6800 testing machine capable of performing real-time PCR testing. COBAS-6800 can test in high quality and quantity, including around 1,200 samples in 24 hours. This will increase our testing capacity and will no longer be pending testing due to a lack of capacity.
  2. Prime Minister Modi recently announced the “Atma Dependent India Campaign”. Under this scheme, around Rs 20 lakh crore has been allocated. Along with this scheme, the Prime Minister also announced “Vocal for Local”. KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission) has come forward to become “Vocal for Local”. The Vocal for Local aims to promote local products. This is because, with lockdown and COVID-19 threats, it was local production that helped people run their routines. It consisted mainly of the supply of essential commodities. To achieve the goal of “Vocal for Local”, KVIC has issued guidelines for implementing major projects under PMEGP (Prime Minister Employment Generation Program).
  3. The PM CARES Fund Trust was created on 27 March 2020. It is headed by Prime Minister Modi. Other members include Home Minister, Defense Minister, and Finance Minister. The allocated funds will be used to purchase 50,000 ventilators. Ventilators will be purchased at Rs 2,000 crore. These ventilators will be sent to the government-run COVID-19 hospitals. State Governments and Union Territories will be provided with approximately Rs.1000 crores. This amount will be given to the municipal commissioners and district collectors. It will be used to provide food, transport, and medical treatment to migrants. It will be divided into states based on the number of people affected by the 1000 crore 2011 census and COVID-19. Vaccination against COVID-19 is currently the most important need. Rs 100 crore has been allocated to support vaccine developers.
  4. IAS officer V. Vidyavati has been appointed as the new Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) with effect from May 12, 2020. She is a 1991 batch Karnataka cadre officer. Vidyavati will continue to serve as an Additional Secretary to the Government of India. His appointment has been confirmed by the order of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  5. Indian Railways has made it mandatory for passengers to travel on the train to have the Arogya Setu App. According to Railways, it has now become mandatory for passengers to download the Arogya Setu app on their mobile phones before starting the journey. “Arogya Setu” is the official COVID-19 tracking app launched by the Government of India. It has been developed by the National e-Governance Division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  6. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and eight other candidates in Maharashtra were declared elected unopposed to the State Legislative Council today. The announcement was made by the State Election Commission after the deadline for the withdrawal of nomination papers. Shri Thackeray became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in November last year. He needed to become a member of any House of the Legislature by 27 May 2020.
  7. A new song (Song) has been unveiled by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations-ICCR called United we Fight, which has performed by well-known musicians such as Usha Uthup and Joe Alvares. The song, written and composed by Alvars and sung by many famous singers across the country, has been released to give people a message of hope to unite and fight against Covid-19. The song is a musical performance whose English lyrics were launched with Indian classical music notes and beats to enhance the feeling of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) dedicated this song to the whole world, whose lyrics are, United we stand, steadfastly helping, assisting, sharing knowledge, cooperating and coordinating with each other,
  8. The Water Life Mission aims to provide drinking water to every household. Its purpose is to provide a null connection to each rural family. The central government will implement the mission on a priority basis. The Central Government has advised the State Governments to adopt this mission to achieve two objectives. This includes providing tap water connections to every rural household and providing job opportunities to local people and migrants. Based on these orders, the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the Haryana government have formulated a plan to implement the mission by 2022, while the national target has been set for 2024-25.
  9. Ministry of Agriculture released Rs 18,517 crore under the PM-Kisan scheme. This will benefit 9.25 crore families. The Government of India has released Rs 18,517 crore under the PM-Kisan scheme since the lockdown. This amount was released as a part of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana Scheme. On the one hand, the Government of India is distributing food grains and pulses for free under the public distribution system to make the lives of people easier during the lockdown. On the other hand, the government is procuring rabi crops. During this Rabi season 2020-21, the Government of India through the Food Corporation of India has procured 269 lakh tonnes of wheat. Besides, 3.17 lakh tonnes of the gram, 3.67 lakh tonnes of mustard, and 1.86 lakh tonnes of Toor dal have been purchased.
  10. The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has constituted a committee to make recommendations on how to make up for the loss of children’s studies due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The twelve-member committee has been chaired by the Commissioner of School Education and has been asked to chalk out an action plan to provide education to children with the help of technology.
  11. According to the Lancet report titled India State-Level Diseases Burden Initiative, child and maternal malnutrition are the cause of death of 68% of children under the age of five in India. This report is the first comprehensive estimate of district-level trends of child mortality in India since 2000. It also states that 83% of newborn deaths occurred due to low birth weight and low gestation. Although child mortality across the country has improved from 2000 to 2017, inequalities between different districts have also increased.
  12. Gujarat is fully ready to implement a sensor-based service provider system in the rural drinking water sector under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). In this regard, experimental implementation is already going on in 2 districts of the state to monitor the feasibility of water supply i.e. adequate quantity and prescribed quality of drinking water being provided in each rural household on a long term basis.
  13. The Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan attended the 32nd meeting of the Commonwealth Health Ministers through video conference here. The theme of the meeting was – to respond to the COVID-19 coordinated by the Commonwealth.
  14. Gujarat, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced the Atmanbirar Gujarat Sahay Yojana. The scheme was launched for small shopkeepers and self-employed affected by the lockdown. Under the scheme, the beneficiaries will be given a collateral-free loan of Rs 1 lakh for two years at 2%.
  15. The External Affairs Minister of India, Shri S. Jaishankar attended the meeting of SCO Foreign Ministers. The meeting was attended by foreign ministers through video conferencing. Foreign Ministers of China and Pakistan also attended the meeting. In this meeting, the Foreign Ministers discussed the COVID-19 crisis and coordination efforts. He also discussed the social and economic consequences of the crisis and how to deal with it. Apart from COVID-19, the major issue included the situation in Afghanistan. The ministers also discussed the upcoming 75th anniversary of World War II and the 75th anniversary of the United Nations. Also preparations for the SCO summit in St. Petersburg, Russia were also discussed. It will be held on 9-10 June 2020.
  16. Robert Azevedo, the head of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has decided to leave his office a year before his term ends due to personal reasons. Former Brazilian diplomat Azevedo said he would step down on August 31. His work was for seven years but he is leaving his post a year ago. The WTO director-general is stepping down at a time when US President Donald Trump is under tremendous pressure from him.
  17. The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) based in Genoa has developed an ‘iFeel-You’ bracelet for social distancing. This bracelet will help the users to follow the social distancing rules. This bracelet has been developed as a safety measure in coronavirus lockdown, which is gradually being released. This bracelet uses only one radio signal so that the other bracelet is detected close by, although it does not use GPS due to which the user’s location cannot be tracked. It reminds us by giving signs only when the rules of social distancing are not being followed.
  18. Spirulina groundnut chikki has been prepared by the Central Food Technological Research Institute-CFTRI, Mysuru based Central Food Technological Research Institute-CFTRI. Spirulina groundnut chikki will provide micronutrients along with enhancing the immunity of people in this difficult time of the pandemic. Items provided by spirulina groundnut chikki include micronutrients such as vitamin A, beta carotene, and easily digested choline. Spirulina groundnut chikki made by CFTRI is distributed in this time of COVID-19 epidemic to enhance the immunity of migrant laborers living in Bengaluru and its surrounding areas.
