  1. India’s Statue of Unity has been included in the 8 Wonders of SCO. This year the meeting of the Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be held in India. Countries like India, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan will participate in it. This “Statue of Unity” is the statue of the country’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The construction of this statue has cost Rs 2900 crores. The “Statue of Unity” is the largest in the world, its height is 182 meters. America’s “Statue of Liberty” has a height of 93 meters.
  2. The US Treasury Department has removed China from the list of currency manipulators. This decision was taken just before the commencement of the first phase of the US-China trade agreement. In August 2019, China was officially identified by the US as a currency manipulator and also accused China of using the yuan to take an unfair competitive advantage in trade. There are occasions after 1994 when China has been identified as a currency manipulator.
  3. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics recently launched the TB Free Air for Every Child ‘program in Kerala. Under this program, 2500 pediatric patients will be trained by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics on the treatment of tuberculosis. It aims to end TB in children in the state. Tuberculosis is a contagious disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This disease is transmitted from one person to another through air. The most common is lung TB but it can occur in any part of the body like uterus, mouth, liver, kidney, larynx, brain, bone.
  4. Michael Debabrata Patra has been appointed as Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India. The post was lying vacant after the resignation of Viral V. Acharya since June last year. Mr. Patra has been appointed to this post for three years and will be the fourth deputy governor of the Reserve Bank. The other three deputy governors of the Reserve Bank of India are NS Vishwanathan, BP Kanungo and MK Jain. Presently, Mr. Patra is the Executive Director of the Monetary Policy Department at the Reserve Bank. As deputy governor, he will continue to look after the work of this department.
  5. The Center has identified 16 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and 10 islands in the Lakshadweep for their overall development by increasing tourism and export facilities for seafood and coconut-based products. This was informed at the sixth meeting of the Island Development Agency-IDA in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Home Minister Amit Shah. The IDA reviewed the progress of the overall development plan for the islands. For the first time in the country, the initiative for sustainable development of identified islands has been taken under scientific capacity assessment under IDA. The meeting focused on ‘green development in the islands’. The progress of the Holistic Development of Islands program was reviewed in this meeting.
  6. Japan’s Coast Guard ship Ichigo arrived at the Chennai port to participate in “Sahyog-Kaijin”, an annual joint exercise by INDIA and JAPAN. The joint exercise between the Coast Guard of the two countries began in the year 2000. This is the 19th practice.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the Center of Excellence for Traditional Telugu Studies (Center of Excellence for Studies in Classical Telugu) on 21 January in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. The center will focus on the development of rich classical Telugu through research, seminars, debates and various activities. This Telugu center will be under the Central Indian Language Institute (Center of Excellence for Studies Central Indian Languages).
  8. The Bhogi festival before Pongal is being celebrated in many places in Tamil Nadu and South India. This is the last day of Margali month in the Tamil calendar. On this day preparations are made for the Pongal festival and all unnecessary and unusable items are disposed of.

  10. The Income Tax Department has set up 24×7 control rooms to monitor the illegal use of black money and cash during elections in Delhi. Also, the Election Commission has appointed 22 IRS officers of the IT department as expenditure observers for these elections.
  11. Infosys has entered into a five-year agreement with GEFCO to convert its worldwide operations to digital. Infosys has partnered with multimodal supply chain solution provider, GEFCO to improve its digital transformation. Digital services and consulting firm Infosys will help GEFCO to transform GEFCO’s next generation of business application management services. It will also help GEFCO to emerge as a true digital organization. The main objective of the partnership is to create new sustainable sources of competitive advantage and collaborate with GEFCO to continuously improve for customers.
  12. Indian Railways has successfully signed an MoU with RailTel for implementation of the second phase after successfully implementing the first phase of NIC’s e-office in its 58 units for more than 5,000 users. RailTel is a mini Ratna enterprise of the Ministry of Railways. In the second phase, RailTel will register more than 39000 users on NIC’s e-office platform by 30 June. The first phase of NIC’s e-office was started with the target of completing by March 2020 but completing more than 5 thousand users in 58 units of the Indian Railways, completing it ahead of time.
  13. The central government has decided to constitute an 11-member committee to review the issue of amendment of royalty rates of major minerals. The panel was chaired by Dr. K.K. Rajeshwar Rao will do. The committee will also include the mine secretaries of various states. The members of the committee will be mines secretaries of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha.
  14. Recently, the Central Government has introduced the ‘Central Accident Database Management System’.
