  1. “Vijay Diwas” is celebrated every year on 16 December in India for the Indian military victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War for the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan.
  2. The deepest place in the world is found in the Denman Glacier of Antarctica, South Pole. This discovery occurred after drawing a geographical map of Antarctica. The deepest valley in the Denman Glacier is 3.5 km (11500 ft) below sea level. It was discovered by scientists at the University of California. It was published in the journal Nature Geoscience. If we compare with the first discoveries, the deepest place of land on earth is on the banks of the Dead Sea. Its depth is 413 m (1355 ft).
  3. The 37th National Seminar of Heads of Police Training Institutes was organized in New Delhi. The seminar was organized by the Policy Research and Development Bureau (BPR & D). The theme of the seminar was ‘Optimal Utilization of Resources-Through Sharing and Networking’. A directory of Indian Police Training Institutes (DIPTI) was also released during the event, which has information on the resources of about 300 police training institutes across the country.
  4. The 107th Indian Science Congress will be held in Bengaluru from January 3, 2020. Its theme is ‘Science and Technology: Rural Development’. It will be inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The Indian Science Congress Association organizes this event every year, in this event scientists from all over the world discuss innovation and research. In this event 6 Nobel Prize-winning scientists from Germany, Hungary, England, etc. will also take part. The Indian Science Congress was established in 1914, it consists of more than 30,000 scientists as members.
  5. Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy inaugurated the virtual police station at Andhra University. This is the first such facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The AU facility is seen as a pilot project and will later be replicated in other educational institutions. This initiative will help reduce the gap between the students and the police department. A virtual police station has been set up at the suggestion of the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University to make it easy for students to report complaints.
  6. Recently the Lok Sabha passed the Central Sanskrit University Bill, 2019, through which the three Sanskrit Universities will be converted into Central Universities. Through this bill, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan (Bhopal), Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth (New Delhi) and Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth (Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh) will be made Central Universities. These universities impart Sanskrit education to the students. Sanskrit language is taught in more than 250 universities in 100 countries worldwide. Significantly, Sanskrit is taught in 14 universities in Germany.

  1. Ministry of Earth Sciences has developed a mobile application named Sagaravani through which information, advice and early warning about the sea and oceans can be given to various user communities including fishermen. Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan gave this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
  2. So far more than one crore 65 lakh farmers of the country have registered themselves in the National Agricultural Market ie e-NAM. Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar gave this information in Rajya Sabha. He said that 585 markets with wholesale prices have been linked to the e-NAM platform and 415 additional markets have been approved to be added. In response to a question, Mr. Tomar said that till November 2 this year, two crore 99 lakh metric tonnes of agricultural products worth Rs 84 thousand 842 crore were registered on the e-NAM platform.
  3. Former Sudan President Omar Al Bashir has been sentenced to two years of imprisonment by a Khartoum court in a money laundering and corruption case. This is the first decision in connection with the ongoing legal action against Al Bashir. Bashir is wanted for action in the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and genocide during the Darfur conflict.
  4. Design Council of India (IDC) launched Chartered Designs of India (CDI) and Design Education Quality Mark (DEQM) in New Delhi. These two initiatives of IDC and National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad will help address the five challenges of design, quality of design, quality of education for design, raising priority for design in industry, and design for public purpose. DEQM will set design education programs to pre-determined standards and provide Design Education Quality Marks to institutions to meet the provisions of published standards. Everyone will get information from the quality mark that the minimum levels of quality and standards are guaranteed in this institution. Also, there exists a neutral review process by third parties. Quality Mark allows students to choose the appropriate design program of their choice, It will help to convince prospective employers about the status of the Design Institute and to inform the society about the quality code compliance by the Design Institute. The second initiative launched by CDI envisages an institution that would set professional standards of design process in India. The focus of the CDI will be on the professional designer identified by design, education or experience. The need for Quality Code has been felt as the number of institutes providing design qualifications in India has increased considerably hence the need for the creation of a guiding framework. It represents the design syllabus and the general discretion/philosophy to implement it.   5. The Maharashtra government has decided to name the Nagpur-Mumbai Samriddhi Express Way after Bala Saheb Thackeray. Apart from this, many other announcements were made regarding the highway. This includes the decision to allocate an additional capital of Rs 3500 crore for the Samridhi highway. With the construction of 705 km of Samriddhi highway, the 15-hour journey between Mumbai-Nagpur will be completed in about 8 hours and people will be able to go straight to Nagpur at a speed of 150 km.

MasterCard, an American multinational financial services corporation, has tied up with Federal Bank to provide an additional layer of security function called MasterCard Identity Checks for digital transactions performed by bank cardholders. A new layer of protection will be provided using the latest authentication standards of 3-D Secure EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa).

The United States has overtaken Kuwait to become India’s sixth-largest oil supplier as it supplied 70 percent more crude oil to the world’s third-largest energy consumer during April – September. Iraq remains India’s top crude oil supplier, accounting for about a quarter of the country’s oil needs. Iraq sold 26 million tonnes of crude oil to India from April to September. Saudi Arabia ranks second. Nigeria ranks third in the supply of crude oil to India.
  8. The MP government is going to organize a three-day ‘Namaste Orchha’ festival to make tourists a memorable tour and to give Orchha a new identity in the temporary list of UNESCO. In it, Orchha’s rich cultural heritage and folk art and culture will be presented to the people in a new color. To promote Orchha’s historical cultural heritage and tourism, it can encourage cultural diversity, natural beauty, and heritage related to established art. The festival is being organized from 6-8 March 2020.
  9. Hailing from Kanodara village in Gujarat, Safin Hasan has become the youngest IPS officer in the country. Hassan, 22, got his first posting in his home district Jamnagar after training, he will take over as Assistant Superintendent of Police on 23 December.
  10. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the meeting of the Advisory Committee of Parliament for the Ministry of Defense in New Delhi. The theme of the meeting was the Border Roads Organization (BRO-Border Roads Organization). During the meeting, BROs who were instrumental in building the border structure and improving the lives of the people living in the border areas were appreciated.
  11. The Government of India has increased the price of 21 drugs for the first time using the Drug Price Control Order, 2013. The objective of this price increase is to increase the availability of these drugs in the market. The price of these 21 medicines has been increased by 50%. Most of the ingredients of these medicines are imported from China. In the last two years, the value of the ingredients used in medicines has increased from 5% to 88%. It is worth noting that 40-80% of the cost of medicines comes from these elements. Drugs that have increased in value include BCG vaccine, malaria, penicillin, leprosy, antibiotics, anti-allergic medications, and other life-saving drugs.

  16. Scientists at the US Space Agency NASA have detected patterns of global air circulation in the atmosphere 120 to 300 kilometers above the surface of Mars. A team including researchers from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in the US used NASA’s Maven (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) spacecraft to record wind measurements on the red planet. For this, the Natural Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) device was used in Maven spacecraft. This device is outside the spacecraft and keeps swinging back and forth. From this, the winds on the surface of Mars can be detected. The study, published in the Science Journal, used only two days of data each month between 2016 and 2018.

The Supreme Court has ordered a judicial inquiry, taking a major step on a petition seeking a probe into the encounter of four accused of murdering a woman doctor after being raped in Hyderabad as ‘fake’. The former judge will be Justice VS Sirpurkar. Bombay High Court Judge Justice Rekha Baldota and former Director of CBI DR Karthikeyan will be the other members of the inquiry panel.
