English - 12 February 2020 Current Affairs
  1. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar have released the first look of a biopic on former President APJ Abdul Kalam in New Delhi. Javadekar, along with producer and director Madhur Bhandarkar and Hollywood producer and director Johnny Martin, released a poster of the film on the occasion. Hollywood actor Muhammad Ali is playing the role of Dr. Kalam in the film.
  2. On February 9, 2020, NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) launched the Solar Orbiter Mission to study the Sun. This orbiter will take the first pictures of the sun’s north and poles. It was launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida. It will cover a distance of about 4 crores 18 lakh kilometers in 7 years to get closer to the Sun. The orbiter will try to find answers to all the questions about the Sun that affect our solar system. The program set for the orbiter involves examining the relation of charged particles continuously flying across the Sun’s surface, the flow of air, the magnetic field inside the Sun, and the heliosphere it produces. NASA had earlier also launched the Parker Solar Probe Mission to study the Sun.
  3. Kamya Karthikeyan (12), a seventh-grade student of Naval School (NCS), Mumbai, has become the youngest girl in the world to conquer Ekonkagua, the highest mountain peak in South America. Kamya won the 6962-meter high mountain peak and hoisted the tricolor there on 1 February 2020.
  4. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.K. Palanisamy has stated that the Cauvery delta area in the state will be declared a protected special agricultural zone. In 2019, the central government allotted oil gas exploration projects in the Cauvery basin. This was followed by massive protests amid the water crisis. The excavation of hydrocarbons requires large amounts of freshwater. After the declaration of a safe agricultural zone, now the permission of the state government will have to be taken to start the project in this area. This means that now private companies in this sector cannot start oil and gas exploration projects without the approval of the state government. When an area is declared as a safe agricultural area, then that land cannot be used for any work other than agriculture.
  5. Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon has inaugurated the Hunar Haat in Indore. Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi was also present on the occasion. Hunar Haat is being organized until 16 February 2020. Hunar Haat is an exhibition of handicrafts and traditional products made by artisans of minority communities. Hunar Haat is organized by the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
  6. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry have decided to associate the 20 best performing smart cities as ‘sister cities’ with poor performing smart cities. The best performing smart cities are Tiruppur, Nagpur, Bhopal, Ranchi, Kanpur, Surat, Indore, Vellore, Visakhapatnam, Varanasi, Nashik, Vadodara, Pune, Kota, Davangere, Dehradun, Udaipur, Amravati, and Agra. The program of linking the best performing smart cities with poorly performing smart cities as ‘sister cities’ is being called 20-20 formula. Under this program, Sister Cities will sign the memorandum of understanding.
  7. Between February 17, 2020, and February 22, 2020, the 13th United Nations Migratory Bird Species Conservation Conference will be held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This conference is abbreviated as CMS-COP-13 (13th Conference of Parties (COP) of the Convention on Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals). India has been elected as the President of this conference for the next three years. Delegates from 130 countries will participate in this conference.   8. The 23rd National Conference on e-Governance was held in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The Mumbai Declaration was adopted at this conference. In this conference, e-governance services being provided by all the states and union territories of the country were evaluated. Delhi, Chandigarh and Daman and Diu were the pioneers in providing e-Governance services in the Union Territories. While Haryana and Rajasthan lead the list of states.
  9. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded the 2019 Coach Lifetime Achievement Award to Indian badminton coach Pullela Gopichand. Gopichand has played an important role in the development of Indian badminton and under his guidance, players like Olympic medalist Saina Nehwal, Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu, and Kidambi Srikanth have been continuously learning. Men of the 2019 International Olympic Committee’s Coach Lifetime Achievement Award for their role in the development of C has been awarded “Honorable Mention”.
  10. Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) has set up a research and development center, named ‘Science and Applied Research Alliance and Support (SARAS)’. This research and development center focuses on sustainable models for development in coal mining. The R&D center will be the hub of excellence, infrastructure up-gradation and IT initiatives for the subsidiary of Coal India Limited. NCL has come up with a unique concept/model ‘SARAS’ to ensure preparation with the current and future challenges of the mining sector.
  11. Prasar Bharati president Surya Prakash retired. He took office in 2014 and completed two terms here. Prasar Bharati said in a tweet that Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar praised Surya Prakash for completing two terms and remembered his invaluable contribution to the organization.
  12. Amid escalating tensions with the US (United States), Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have launched a short-range ballistic missile, the Rad-500. Rad-500 – has a range of up to 500 km (310 mi). The Rad-500 is also equipped with a new Zohir engine made of composite materials compared to earlier steel models.
  13. To help NET and Ph.D. students, the University Grants Commission has created an educational employment portal on its website www.ugc.ac.in. In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that to attract the attention of universities, colleges, and other employment organizations, students can submit their educational details on this portal.
  14. The African Union Summit was held in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. This summit was important from India’s point of view, India has signed ‘Lucknow Declaration’ with 50 African countries in DefExpo 2020.   16. India has offered help to China to deal with the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus. In a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed solidarity with the President of China and the people there, witnessing the outbreak of the virus. Mr. Modi has expressed his gratitude to China for helping Indians return home from Hubei Province, and has offered assistance to China in tackling this challenge. China has praised India’s welcome for its cooperation in combating the novel coronavirus.
  17. At the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, the Korean film Parasite won 4 Oscars, including Best Picture, overtaking all of Hollywood. The film’s director Bong Joon Ho has been awarded the Best Director. The same film has also received an award in the International Feature Film category. Even in the original screenplay category, Parasite has outpaced Hollywood. Parasite’s victory is historic because the film has won 3 awards in the main category of the Oscar Awards, being a foreign language.
  18. Aditya Mehta of Bei won the National Snooker Championship held in Pune. In the final, he defeated world champion, Pankaj Advani. In the women’s category, Madhya Pradesh Vidya Pillai won the title.
  19. Ladakh Scouts Regimental Center (LSRC) Red won the first Khelo India Ice Hockey Tournament 2020 in the men’s category. He defeated the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) team 3–2 in a nail-biting thriller final match. 13 teams participated in the Khelo India Ice Hockey Championship.
  20. Australia was awarded the ICC Women’s Championship Trophy, which they retained by winning victories in the eight-team ODI Championship between 2017 and 2020. Meg Lanning’s team also won this trophy last time. Captain Lanning was awarded by ICC Women’s Cricket Manager Holly Colvin.
  21. Indian tennis player Ankita Raina, along with her partner Bibiane Schoofs, won the finals of the ITF Women’s Doubles event (held in Thailand) for $ 25,000.
  22. An international team of astronomers led by scientists at the University of California, United States (US) has discovered a giant monster galaxy called Dubsmash as XMM-2599. This galaxy existed about 12 billion years ago, exactly 1.8 billion years after the universe was formed. The Galaxy XMM-2599 was discovered during the XMM-2599 idle phase.
  23. The Vice President of India and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Mr. Muppavarappu Venkaiah Naidu, released a book titled ‘A Child of Destiny’ by Professor Koneru Ramakrishna Rao at GIITM (Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management) University, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

  27. The world’s first such solar thermal power plant has been built at Brahmakumari Institute in Abu Road, Rajasthan, which operates 24 hours. It also features thermal storage, in which the heat of the sun is collected. Parabolic reflectors with fix focus technology were used for the first time in this plant itself. These parabolic reflectors rotate along the direction of the sun like a sunflower. It is named India One. The government of India and Germany has 70% funding to make it. The Brahmakumari Institute has spent 30% of the money. It was developed as a research project. Thousands of students from all over the world come here for research. This plant produces 35 thousand people daily. Also, 20 thousand townships get electricity.
