  1. The process of installing Internet Protocol (IP) based Video Surveillance System (VSS) in booking offices etc. has been initiated. Railway Board has approved works to install a video surveillance system in 983 stations of Indian Railways under the Nirbhaya fund. This year, Rs 250 crore has been allocated to Indian Railways from the Nirbhaya fund to set up a video surveillance system. RailTel, a Mini Ratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways, has been entrusted with the task of setting up an IP-based video surveillance system, including video analytics and facial recognition system. Live feeds of CCTV cameras are shown on several screens in the control room of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) for surveillance. In the first phase, VSS is being installed at 200 stations across the country and so far the work has been completed at 81 stations across the country. The first phase for this year’s Targeted, South-West Rail (SWR) has recently introduced a video surveillance system (CCTV) in 6 major stations. Under this, 33 cameras have been installed in Bellary, 36 cameras in Belagavi, 36 cameras in Vasco da Gama, 21 cameras in Bengaluru Cantt, 36 cameras in Bangarapet. Also, work is in progress at 3 stations – Hassan, Shivamoga Town and Sathya Sai Prasanthi Nilayam and will be commissioned soon.
  2. After the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, the government is making diplomats from 16 countries, including the US, visit the state for the first time. In October last year, 23 members of the European Parliament visited the valley. The tour took place at the initiative of an NGO and was not an official visit to the European Union (EU). This time the whole program has been decided by the government. The visit is being conducted at the request of foreign diplomats only so that they can take stock of the security situation and know the opinion of political parties. Apart from the US, diplomats from Bangladesh, Vietnam, Norway, Maldives, South Korea, Morocco, and Nigeria are included in this delegation.
  3. Kashmir will be connected to other parts of the country by the railway network by December next year. The government has set a new deadline for the completion of the construction of the world’s highest railway bridge. Under this, the height of the railway line is estimated to be 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower. One kilometer and 315 meters long railway bridge will establish connectivity between Bakkal near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir and Kauri near Srinagar. It is being constructed as part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail connectivity project, which has a length of one hundred and eleven kilometers.

  1. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will inaugurate an ambitious project under the sea from Chennai to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. BSNL, a public sector undertaking, will implement this project under the Universal Service Observation Fund. The project will initially involve laying cables from Chennai to the Carbines Cove in Port Blair. After this, it will be expanded from here to the other seven important islands – Long Island, Swaraj Island, Hatabe, Kar-Nicobar, and Campbell. The laying of cable up to two thousand 240 kilometers long route will cost Rs. One thousand 224 crores. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

  3. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified new wetland conservation rules. It prohibits the establishment or expansion of industries in wetlands and the construction and disposal of debris. A wetland is a land that is either permanently or seasonally waterlogged and becomes a different type of ecology. The Ministry stated that each State and Union Territory would have to set up an authority that would prescribe ways of conserving and judicious use of wetlands in their jurisdiction.

In the meeting of the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Council chaired by the Deputy Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu, it has been decided to give the benefit of the Jammu and Kashmir Special Sugar Scheme to the beneficiary families under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana. More than two lakh 33 thousand families will get benefits under this scheme, who will be given one kg of sugar per month at the rate of Rs. The council also decided to change the name of Mufti Muhammad Saeed Food Eligibility Scheme to Jammu and Kashmir Food Eligibility Scheme.
  2. The country’s largest public sector bank- State Bank of India has announced a plan to give a guarantee to the home buyers. The scheme, named residential builder finance with buyer guarantee ‘(RBBG), aims to accelerate the sale of houses and maintain the confidence of the home buyers. Under this scheme, customers taking residential loans from State Bank of India will be guaranteed completion of select residential projects. The scheme will focus on affordable housing projects up to Rs 2.5 crore and will be initially implemented in ten cities.
  3. The Competition Commission of India released a report titled ‘Market Study on E-Commerce in India: Key Findings and Observations’. According to this report, the number of internet users in India in 2017 was 445.96 million, which has now increased to 665.31 million. The e-commerce sector recorded 1 to 1.2 million transactions per day in July 2018.
