  1. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has revoked the recognition of the Karate Association of India – KAI for violation of the constitution and guidelines. The IOA recognized the KAI on 8 August 2017 on the condition of approval from the Executive Council-General Assembly. Approval of KAI’s recognition was still pending as several complaints have been received against him for the last two years.
  2. The 31st International Kite Festival started on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad in Gujarat. It will run till Makar Sakranti on 14 January. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the colorful kite festival. A large number of foreign tourists also participate in this festival.
  3. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has approved the issuance of a five-year multi-trip tourist visa to citizens of all countries visiting their country. This decision was taken at the first meeting of this year’s cabinet. The move has been taken as part of efforts to support the UAE’s tourism economy and to strengthen the UAE’s position as a global tourist destination. The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, shared this decision in a tweet.
  4. On 6 January, an Oman vessel arrived in Goa to take part in the ‘Nassim al Bahir’ bilateral naval exercise. In this exercise, RNOV Al Rasikh of the Navy of Oman and RNOV Khasab has arrived in Goa. A vessel named “Subhadra and Vyasa” will participate in this exercise from India. This naval exercise has been organized since 1993. The ‘Al Najah’ exercise is conducted between the land forces of these two countries. “X Eastern Bridge” exercise is conducted between the Air Force of the two countries.
  5. Ravindra Nath Mehto, a member of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha from Nala Assembly constituency in Jharkhand, was unanimously elected the new Speaker of the Assembly. Protem speaker Stephen Marandi administered the oath to the newly elected president.
  6. The Government of India has sanctioned a disaster relief fund of Rs 5,908 crore for seven states. This includes Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Maharashtra, and Himachal Pradesh. These states were greatly affected by floods and landslides. A high-level committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the Disaster Relief Fund from the National Disaster Response Fund on 6 January 2020. In 2019-20, the Government of India released Rs 8,068 crore from its stake in the State Disaster Response Fund. 75% contribution to this fund is contributed by the central government, while 25% is contributed by the states.
  7. Iran’s Parliament-Majlis approved a very important bill declaring the US Army and its Ministry of Defense as terrorist entities. The decision comes after the assassination of Qasim Sulemani, Iran’s top military commander, in the US attack last week. Tensions between the two countries have reached a peak after General Suleimani was killed in a US drone strike outside Baghdad Airport.
  8. A Delhi court has issued a death warrant in the names of the four accused in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder. These four accused will be hanged in Tihar Jail on January 22, 2020, at seven in the morning. The order was issued by Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora. These four accused can use legal remedies within 14 days. On July 9, the reconsideration petition filed by the three accused Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma was quashed by the Supreme Court. The main accused of this hate crime committed suicide during a trial in Tihar Jail. While one of the accused, Mohammed Afroz, was released after being sent to the correctional home for being too young.
  9. Mission Indradhanush started in two hundred and seventy-two districts of 27 states, six hundred and fifty development blocks of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. To promote regular programs of vaccination in the country, the government has launched Mission-2.0. It aims to provide all medicines in areas left out in other campaigns and reach out to children and pregnant women in identified districts. Mission Indradhanush will be run till March 2020. The Indradhanush mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2014 to further the vaccination campaign.

On January 7, 2020, the International Meteorological Organization released the “State of Climate Report” for 2019, according to this report, 1,659 people died in India due to climate change in 2019. This report states that the year 2019 is the hottest year after 1901. Many events related to climate change came out in 2019, including cyclone, flood, summer wave, cold wave, and landslide, etc. The maximum number of 650 deaths occurred due to these incidents in Bihar, out of which 350 people died due to extreme heat while 300 people died due to floods. After Bihar, a large number of people died in incidents related to climate change in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Karnataka.
  11. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar conferred the International Yoga Day Media Awards to 30 media houses in New Delhi. The Ministry had announced these awards in June last year to honor the contribution of the media in propagating the message of Yoga. These are the first such awards. These awards have been instituted to honor the media for their role and responsibility in propagating yoga in India and abroad. Newspapers were awarded 11 in the category of best media coverage about yoga, eight in the category of best media coverage on television and 11 in the category of best media coverage on radio.

Gross Value Added (GVA) growth is expected to be 4.9%. It rose by 6.6% last year.

  12. The Reserve Bank of India has given “in-principle” approval to convert Shivalik Mercantile Co-operative Bank Limited into Small Finance Bank (SFB). The change in SFB will be done under the “Scheme for Voluntary Transformation of Small Co-operative Banks of Urban Cooperative Banks” released on 27 September 2018. These approvals will be valid for 18 months for ‘in-principle’ approval so that the applicant complies with the requirements of the scheme such as compliance with the guideline of granting ‘on-demand’ licenses to small finance banks in the private sector and meeting other conditions set by the Reserve Bank.
