  1. Maldives has once again become a member of the Commonwealth. President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih has reported that the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Petrika Scotland has confirmed this and Maldives has become the 54th member country of the Commonwealth. President Solih’s cabinet passed a proposal to rejoin the Commonwealth soon after coming to power in 2018. Earlier Maldives had been a member of the Commonwealth since 1982 but in 2016, the then President Abdullah Yamin decided to secede from the Commonwealth in protest against growing international pressure over corruption and human rights violations.
  2. Britain formally relinquished EU membership. Britain has separated from the European Union after nearly four years of political turmoil. Britain was a member of the European Union for 47 years. The UK referendum was backed by a slight majority in the 2016 referendum. Two general elections followed and two Prime Ministers changed.
  3. America’s 21-year-old tennis player Sophia Kenin won the women’s singles title at the first Grand Slam Australian Open of the year. Sophia reached the final of a Grand Slam for the first time. He defeated two Grand Slam champions Spain’s Garbin Muguruza 4-6 6-2 6-2. Sophia Kenin became the youngest player to win the tournament after 2008.
  4. “Rubigula”, the official mascot of the 2020 National Games to be held in Panaji, Goa, has unveiled the flame-throated Bulbul (Kalgi Bulbul). Kalgi Bulbul is also the state bird of Goa. Goa will host the 36th edition of the National Games, which runs from 20 October to 4 November 2020.
  5. Indian Air Force Indigenous jet biofuel was used in “A.N. 32 aircraft”, it was a test flight. During this time the aircraft made a successful landing at Leh Airport. This is the first time that jet biofuel has been used in both aircraft engines. Leh is situated at an altitude of 10,682 feet. It is one of the highest altitude airfields. The aircraft is extremely difficult to fly in this region due to wind turbulence and mountains.
  6. Veteran diplomat Ajay Bisaria was appointed Indian High Commissioner to Canada. This position is very important for India-Canada relations. Bisaria was serving as India’s High Commissioner to Pakistan but was sent back to India in August last year by New Delhi’s decision to reorganize Jammu and Kashmir and abolish special status.
  7. The US space agency NASA has decided to close “Spitzer Space Telescope”, one of its most successful “Observatory” after 16 years. This is the same observatory that detected gaseous rings on the planet Saturn. This observatory studied the universe by detecting “cosmic infrared radiation”. “Spitzer”
  8. India’s first “Fruit Train” was diverted from the “Tadipatri” railway station to” Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai “in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Air-conditioned containers have been used in this train, the fruit-laden train was diverted from Tadipatri railway station in Andhra Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai from where the consignment of fruits will be sent to Iran. This will save both time and fuel because till now 150 trucks will have 900 km of road through containers. Not far from Jawaharlal Nehru Port, these temperature-controlled containers were loaded onto ships. The government has set a target of exporting 30,000 metric tonnes of fruits from Andhra Pradesh and collaborates with local farmers to increase productivity, yield quality, It is working closely with six major corporate companies to maintain and packaging products and connect farmers to the market. Bananas are being exported from these containers under the brand name “Happy Bananas”. Farmers in the Putlur region of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh and Pulivendula area in Kadapa district are exporting “green Cavendish” bananas to many international markets.
  9. President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the “International Surajkund Fair” on the soil of Haryana. It will be held from 1 to 16 February. The International Surajkund Crafts Fair is organized every year by the “Surajkund Mela” Authority and the Haryana Tourism Department in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Tourism, Textile Industry, Culture, and External Affairs. The fair, which runs till 16 February, has Uzbekistan Partner Country while the theme is from the state of Himachal Pradesh.
  10. The country’s first rail-bus completed its last round on 31 January 2020. This bus was the last to operate between Merta Road to Merta City in the Jodhpur division. Earlier two buses had been declared as condoms. In this 15 km long section of Jodhpur division, first metro gauge, then broad gauge rail-bus service was provided for the movement of passengers.
  11. The Cabinet Appointments Committee has approved the appointment of M. Ajit Kumar as the new chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. M. Ajit Kumar is a 1984 batch Indian Revenue Service officer, he is currently a member of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. Before this, Pranab Kumar Das was the chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
  12. Senior IAS officer Pramod Agarwal took over as the new Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India Limited. He took over after AK Jha retired on 31 January. Aggarwal became the 28th chairman of Coal India.
  13. The Union Minister of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank chaired the meeting of the National Cooperation Commission of India (INCCU) with UNESCO in New Delhi. This was the first meeting after the reorganization of the National Commission.
  14. The 2019 Global Go to Think Tank Index Report (GGTTI) was released by the Lauder Institute’s Think Tank and Civil Society Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. The index ranks the top think tanks around the world. The Observer Research Foundation (ORF) of India was ranked 27th among 176 global think tanks, according to the report. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) of America topped the report.
  15. Bank of Baroda said that it has tied up with CARE Ratings to assess the quality of financial credibility of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The rating agency will evaluate the quality of the financial credibility of the bank’s existing and prospective SME customers.
  16. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has given its approval for a loan of Rs 140 crore to Punjab State Agricultural Development Bank (PSADB) at a low-interest rate. This has been done to strengthen and simultaneously provide financial support to PSADB.
  17. CEO of veteran IT company Wipro “Abidali Neemuchwala” has resigned from the post due to some family commitments. However, till the appointment to this post is made, “Habadali” will continue in the post.
  18. Renowned litterateur “Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana”, who has been honored with awards like Padma Shri, Sahitya Akademi, and Saraswati Award, has passed away. “Dr. Tiwana” was born on May 4, 1935, in village Uchi Rabon district, Ludhiana. “Dr. Dalip Tiwana” has been a professor in the Punjabi Department since the inception of Punjabi University in Patiala. He served long hours as head of the department and later as dean.
  19. 3 students of the National Institute of Technology, Raipur, Chhattisgarh have invented such a plastic that is 100% biodegradable. It usually takes 100 years for single-use plastic to be destroyed. At the same time, it will be destroyed in just one year. It can also be used by recycling. In this case, this single-use can also prove to be a better alternative to plastic. The students have been awarded first prize in the “Pookar Go Green Fest” held at NIT for this invention.

  21. Lieutenant General YK Joshi has taken over as the General Officer Commanding in Chief of the Northern Command. Before taking over at Udhampur, he went to the ‘Dhruv War Memorial’ and paid tribute to the martyrs of Northern Command.
  22. The 13th “International Children’s Film Festival” of Bangladesh ended in Dhaka yesterday. The best feature film award in the international segment was given to the Dutch film “Romies Salon” directed by “Mischa Kamp”. The film is the story of a child Romi who visits his grandmother’s salon, suffering from dementia. Finland’s director “Merja Majenon” received the “Best Director” award for the film “Good Girl”. The German “film – Day X” directed by “Katrina Rivilis” won the “Best Short Film Award”. Bangladeshi director “Ragib Mahmood Shafayit Shah” received the “Young Talent Award” for “Film – The Smoker”, while “Sudipto Shah” was awarded the “Social Film Award” for “Film – Khoka Jokhon Choto Chilam”.
  23. The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has decided to set up an Anti-Drug Task Force under the “Drugs and Drug Abuse Act” to tackle drug addiction and trafficking in the Union Territory.
