  1. On December 30, 2019, Union Environment and Climate Minister Prakash Javadekar released “India State of Forest Report, 2019”. This report is released every two years. Detailed information on forest cover, vegetation density in forest, rate of plantation, etc. is provided in this report. According to this report, the total forest cover (forest cover) of the country is 7,12,249 square kilometers which is 21.67% of the total geographical area of ​​the country. The tree cover of the country is about 95,027 square kilometers which is 2.89% of the total geographical area of ​​the country. The country’s forest cover has increased by 3,976 sq km (0.56%) this year as compared to the India State of Forest Report, 2017. States that have the highest increase in forest cover: Karnataka (1,025 sq km), Andhra Pradesh (990 sq km), Kerala (823 sq km), Jammu and Kashmir (371 sq km) and Himachal Pradesh (334 sq km). Forest cover in the hilly districts of the country is 2,84,006 square kilometers, which is 40.30% of the total geographical area of ​​these districts. Forest cover in tribal districts is 4,22,351 sq km, which is 37.54% of the area of ​​these districts. The total forest cover of the northeast region is 1,70,541 square kilometers, which is 65.05% of the total area of ​​this region. The mangrove cover of the country has increased by 54 square kilometers (1.10%) this year as compared to the previous assessment. The total bamboo-covered area of ​​the country is 1,60,037 square kilometers, an increase of 3,229 square kilometers. At present, the total carbon stock in forests is about 7,124.6 million tonnes, an increase of 42.6 tonnes over the 2017 estimate. There are a total of 62,466 wetlands in the country which cover 3.83% of the country. Maharashtra has the highest dependence on forests for fuel, While the maximum dependence on varnas for fodder is in Madhya Pradesh. According to the latest analysis, 21.40% of the country’s forest cover is affected by the risk of arson.
  2. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat (61) was appointed the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS). The term of General Rawat will start from 31 December which will continue till the next order comes. At the same time, Lieutenant General Manoj Mukund Narwane will take oath as the 28th Army Chief on 31 December. General Bipin Rawat’s three-year term ends on 31 December.

  4. The Assam government is going to start a new scheme from January 1 to give gold to every girl’s wedding in the state. Under the state government’s Arundhati Swarna Yojana, brides will be given 10 grams of gold. The government will spend around Rs 800 crore on this scheme every year. The scheme starts on 1 January 2020. The Assam government has announced that every bride who is 18 years of age, who has passed at least 10th and has registered her marriage, will be given 10 grams of gold as a gift. To take advantage of this scheme, the annual income of the bride’s family should be less than Rs 5 lakh.
  5. The cabinet of Mahavikas Aghadi coalition government headed by Uddhav Thackeray was first expanded in Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party has been appointed as Deputy Chief Minister. Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new 36 ministers in the presence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and NCP Chief Sharad Pawar at a function held in the State Legislative Council premises. Shiv Sena leader Aditya Thackeray is the first member of the Thackeray family to be sworn in as a Minister of State in the Cabinet.
  6. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the third Khelo India Youth Games torch rally to be held in the state from January 10 to 22.   9. Pakistan made public its first indigenous fighter aircraft JF-17. The aircraft, made in collaboration with China, is a two-seater aircraft. Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan said the aircraft has been prepared in a record five months. It will soon join the Pakistani Air Force to become its main fighter aircraft. Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China National Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) are jointly producing the aircraft.
